The 460cc Limit, and the 10cc Nobody Mentions

The short version

A driver head may not exceed 460 cubic centimetres, plus a 10cc measurement tolerance — so a head fails on volume when it measures above 470cc. There are also dimensional caps: 5.0 inches heel-to-toe and 2.8 inches sole-to-crown. Separately, a head the manufacturer marks above 460cc can be treated as non-conforming whatever it actually measures, which is why retail 520cc drivers are straightforwardly illegal.

Two numbers again

As with the spring-effect limit, the number everyone quotes and the number that actually fails a club are not the same.

The written standard is 460 cubic centimetres. A 10cc measurement tolerance is permitted, because water displacement is not a perfectly precise instrument. A head therefore fails on measured volume above 470cc.

You will see 460 quoted everywhere as an absolute ceiling. It is the standard, not the failing point.

The dimensional limits nobody quotes at all

Volume is not the only constraint on head size. Two dimensional caps apply alongside it:

  • 5.0 inches heel-to-toe
  • 2.8 inches sole-to-crown

These rarely bind in practice, because a head that satisfies 460cc is generally within them. They exist to prevent a manufacturer satisfying the volume limit with an extreme shape — a very wide, very shallow head that games the displacement measurement while behaving nothing like a driver.

The marking rule, which is the one that matters commercially

Here is the part that resolves the obvious question about the 520cc drivers sold openly online.

A clubhead that its manufacturer marks as exceeding 460cc can be treated as non-conforming regardless of what it actually measures. You do not get to advertise a 520cc driver and then argue about displacement.

This is why the non-conforming driver market is so straightforward. Intech, MAZEL and Diamond Tour sell heads badged at 520cc. They are not borderline cases awaiting a ruling. They are labelled past the limit and marketed on exactly that basis.

Why anyone wants a bigger head

Not distance, mostly. Forgiveness.

A larger head lets the designer push mass further from the centre of the face, which raises moment of inertia. Higher MOI means the head twists less when you miss the middle, so off-centre strikes lose less ball speed and start closer to your intended line.

That is genuinely useful, and it is why essentially every conforming driver on the market sits at or fractionally under the limit. Manufacturers have been building to the ceiling for two decades.

The honest question about a 520cc head is whether the extra 60cc buys enough additional forgiveness to matter. It buys some. It also produces a head that is heavier to swing, harder to shape, and visually enormous at address. For a golfer who misses the centre badly and consistently, that may be a good trade. For most, the conforming 460cc drivers already capture nearly all of the available benefit.

What to check

If you are playing under the Rules, your driver head needs to conform. Every driver from a major manufacturer does — they are built to the limit deliberately and submitted for evaluation.

If you bought something badged 500cc or 520cc, it does not conform, and it was not sold to you as though it did. Check a specific model here.

Common questions

Is the driver limit 460cc or 470cc?

The written standard is 460cc. A 10cc measurement tolerance is allowed, so a head only fails on measured volume above 470cc. As with the CT limit, the written number and the failing number are different, and both are worth knowing.

Is a 520cc driver illegal?

Yes, unambiguously. It is far past the limit even with the tolerance, and a head marked by its manufacturer above 460cc can be ruled non-conforming regardless of what it measures. The 520cc drivers sold openly online are non-conforming by design.

How is head volume measured?

By water displacement — the head is submerged in a partially filled measuring container and the rise in water level gives the volume.

Are fairway woods and hybrids capped at 460cc?

The 460cc volume limit applies to drivers. Other clubs are governed by the general clubhead requirements rather than this specific volume cap, though in practice nothing else comes close.

Why does a bigger head help?
