What it is
A golf ball engineered to not go sideways.
Conventional balls are spherically symmetrical — the dimple pattern is uniform, so the ball behaves identically regardless of orientation. That is a requirement of the Rules, not an accident of manufacturing.
Polara’s is deliberately asymmetrical. Shallower dimples around the equator, deeper ones at the poles. Aligned correctly on the tee, the pattern reduces the aerodynamic force that sidespin generates. Less sidespin effect, less curve. The company claims up to 75% reduction in hook and slice.
Why it is non-conforming
The specific requirement it fails is spherical symmetry. A conforming ball must perform the same however you orient it on the tee. Polara’s entire mechanism depends on orientation, so it cannot satisfy that requirement — the design and the rule are directly incompatible.
The historical account, widely reported and repeated by Polara itself, is that USGA testing in the 1970s found the ball did reduce hooks and slices, and that it was refused approval on the basis that it would reduce the skill required to play golf. We have not seen the underlying test data, so we report that as the received history rather than as something we have verified.
The lawsuit, which is genuinely a good story
Polara sued the USGA on antitrust grounds in 1978, arguing the association was using its rule-making power to exclude a competing product from the market.
The dispute ran roughly seven years and ended in an out-of-court settlement in 1985, reported at approximately $1.375 million paid by the USGA, with the ball withdrawn from sale. The figure is commonly rounded to $1.4 million.
An amateur sports governing body paying a manufacturer well over a million dollars to take a golf ball off the shelves is a remarkable piece of golf history. We are relying on secondary accounts for the details; we have not examined the court record.
The company later returned with a revised version, which is what you can buy today.
Does it work?
We have not tested it. No launch monitor data, no controlled comparison, no dispersion measurements. Anyone telling you a definitive number without that work is guessing, and we would rather say so than join them.
What we can say is that the underlying aerodynamics are plausible — dimple geometry demonstrably affects how a ball responds to sidespin, which is precisely why the Rules require symmetry in the first place. A design that deliberately breaks symmetry to damp sidespin is not fringe science.
The caveats are structural, and they follow from how the ball works rather than from any test:
It requires correct alignment on every shot. The ball carries an alignment aid and must be set up properly. Get it wrong and you have an ordinary golf ball. This is workable on a tee. Off the fairway, where you cannot orient the ball, the mechanism cannot help you — so any benefit is essentially confined to tee shots.
Damping sidespin means damping spin. The property that reduces your slice should also reduce how much the ball checks on the green, and remove your ability to shape a shot deliberately. Manufacturers of this category generally acknowledge the trade.
It does not fix your swing. It reduces the consequence of a fault while leaving the fault intact. For some golfers that is exactly the trade they want. For a golfer trying to improve, it removes the feedback improvement depends on.
Who it is actually for
Worth trying if: you play social golf only, you slice consistently, you have no interest in fixing it, and you want to finish a round without losing six balls to the right. That is a large and legitimate group of golfers.
Not for you if: you post handicap scores, you compete at any level, you are actively working on your swing, or you value greenside control. In the first two cases it is not a preference — the ball does not conform.
Verdict: a coherent product with a plausible mechanism, aimed at a narrower group than its marketing implies, and worth what it costs to find out for yourself if you are in that group. We are not going to tell you it delivers 75% because we have not measured it, and neither has anyone else who is telling you that.
